I was contacted several years ago by the celebrated artist Caroline Wright to make glass larynx’s for her exhibition ‘Lines of Communication’ Caroline again contacted me in 2019 to create pair of glass lungs for a continuation of her art project.
During this work Caroline approached me with another project & asked if I could quote. She was not aware of timescales as her proposal would be put forward & she would await a response. We were delighted that her idea was accepted but we had 1 week until filming. We had to recreate the ITV logo in glass . I had no drawings to work with and no dimensions. I assured Caroline she would have at least one working sample to film with……and so the work begun.
- Day 1: Dimensions were calculated, logo confirmed and manufacturing procedure established. Material was selected and prepped.
- Day 2 & 3: Individual aspects of the letters were made After 3 full sets of components were manufactured fully assembly begun. However the first ‘I’ did not bend as per the logo, neither did the ’T’ but the ‘V’ looked good.
- Day 4: The ‘I’ was made and now onto the dot. The first one was perfect but in the final process it cracked around the circumference. Another was made this time it survived.
- Day 5: The ’T’ & the ‘V’ were fused and annealed. Fingers crossed it would survive the annealing.
- Day 6: The oven door was opened on overnight process. Much to my relief the letters had survived their fusing, however now they had to cool and edges needed to be ground. All could still be lost at this point. A very nerve wracking few hours and the letters were complete. A phone call to Caroline and the pieces packed.
- Day 7: The letters were collected placed very carefully in Carolines car
- Day 8: Filming began.
